Faux pizza.

Eating low carb can make you feel deprived. You can't have pizza, you can't have chips, you can't have a burger and fries at McDonald's... Having some replacements can go a long way towards helping to stay low carb. Tonight I had little pizzas... not regular pizza, but close enough for me.

The big difference is the "crust"... there is no crust. I buy some whole portabella caps and take out the stem. I wanted a very standard flavor so just used some tomato sauce, Italian mixed cheese, pepperoni and fennel and herbs.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rlgPacvSG_k/SyWRmlsAppI/AAAAAAAAAKU/9AFQxtD6tG8/s320/IMG_2649_0282_edited-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414894219120649874" />

After layering the ingredients pretty much like you do when making regular pizza, I pop them into the oven at 400 for about 10 to 15 minutes... until the cheese starts to brown.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 234px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_rlgPacvSG_k/SyWRma-egDI/AAAAAAAAAKM/8Aqb7JM9dHg/s320/IMG_2651_0284_edited-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414894216245313586" />

And then enjoy the results. I got the recipe idea from 200 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes: Healthy Dinners That Are Ready When You Are! by Dana Carpender. The original recipe, "I've Got a Life" Chicken, called for chicken, mushrooms, orange juice, grated zest, chicken bouillon concentrate, pepper, tomato sauce, soy sauce, Splenda, molasses, garlic and thyme.

Being unable to leave well enough alone I used a can of crushed tomatoes with chiplotle peppers and left out the thyme... thinking with everything else going on in the recipe, perhaps the peppers and thyme might clash.

I grow citrus... I grow a LOT of citrus... so I used one of my satsumas for the juice and zest.

Fast forward past the cooking to the eating part. Everyone thought it was yummy, but could be improved. I'm thinking about leaving out the soy next time... my daughter suggested leaving out the Splenda, as it tasted a bit sweet to her. The orange was very tasty but was so intense it overwhelmed the other flavors. I didn't notice any heat from the chipotles or the garlic... and no tomato flavor. My husband has a cold and has dulled senses... he said "I tasted the orange and it was good" LOL. It might just be that the oranges fresh off the tree are extreme orange... maybe all that good organic growing?

Here's what it looked like in the pot after my husband and I had served ourselves. The kitchen smells good!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 218px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rlgPacvSG_k/SyRNfqzzXcI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/10IXzNz3apY/s320/IMG_2646_0279_edited-1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414537858469027266" />

Oh yeah... the movie.

It was Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. We didn't get to the theater to see it so I ordered it from amazon.

It was like all the Harry Potter movies. I love them. They will remain classics for me.

But I love the books more.

I think I broke my retail bone

I'm a thrift shopper. My husband and I love the hunt, and we find great stuff regularly. Today I spent 25 cents on a bag of wood pieces to use in crafting, and got an oak frame out of the free box.

After dinner, we went "real" shopping... the kind where you walk into a retail store and purchase new items. My main mission was to purchase patterns for $1.99 at Hancock's fabrics, and look if anything else in the store shouted "buy me!" I have some baby patterns already, but none for the stretch cotton pants I want to make for my almost 6 month old granddaughter. I knew it would be easy to find a lovely pattern for the pants, and probably other things as well.

Not so. I really tried to find patterns I wanted to buy... but each one I saw was so ho hum, and I can draft a ho hum pattern by myself. I'm not a new crafter or sewer, and didn't need (or crave) anything else at Hancock's. All I spent in the store was some time.

A bit sulkily, I told my husband I did not want to go home... and maybe wanted to get some baby clothes at the mall. He suggested the Ellenton Outlet Mall, which has some great baby stores. We went in Baby Gap, Gymboree, Carter's, Oshkosh, The Children's Place, VF, and Hartstrings. I contemplated many items. Again, I bought nothing. I kept picturing all the great clothes I have found, from these same labels, for 50 cents, or a dollar, or $3 for a bagful, at the thrift stores I go to, quite a few of which I got "new with tags!"

The pants the baby needs? I'm going to make them, using fabric I already have, after drafting a pattern to fit her cloth diapered butt.

I did buy myself some underwear. Shoes and underwear are items I buy new.

Is this a symptom of overdosing on thrift shopping?

Maybe I don't want a cure.

Bad dog!

Being the mom to 3 dogs, I'm used to dog associated grief. Since then I've collected more, and today I found number 9 at one of my favorite thrift stores. Here it is in action:

They cost more than I am willing to pay at retail, so I was thrilled to see this one marked $20, which was $16 due to a 20% off sale that was being held. It has German markings underneath, which is great, since many now are made in China. I enjoy the Chinese ones, too... but there's something about authenticity...

On the craft front I've crocheted a few more edgings on socks for my granddaughter. This makes 5. I seem to have a problem with addiction...

Snowflake Snack... low carb!

Low carb eating can make me feel a bit deprived at the holidays. I saw these cookies made with regular tortillas dusted with cinnamon sugar and figured a few alterations could make them acceptable for low carb dieters.

I used the smaller tortillas from La Tortilla Factory, just because they are the ones available to me locally. Next time I may try egg white, like in regular cookies. They were sprinkled with cinnamon Splenda, and then I ground some chunk cinnamon on top, as well. The La Tortilla Factory tortillas have just 3 net carbs each, and I cut some of those off! Adding the bit of carb that Splenda and cinnamon both have, it's still a very low carb snack.

The next batch? Yesterday I took advantage of a lull in the raininess to spread annual rye grass seed on the lawn. Florida grass is pretty awful, but we can have several months of lush green if we overseed with rye in the winter.

While passing the little pond at the bottom of the back stairs a snakeskin caught my eye. Normally I'm not a snake phobe... but this year we saw two water moccasins... killing one, with the other slithering away. Water moccasins... yeah - a little bit of a phobia, especially with a baby in the house.

I took the snakeskin out of the water thinking
"Please not a water moccasin... I pondered how I could
fill the snakeskin to see its true shape and other
characteristics. Think about the ruffle pattern you want to use, and the thread/yarn you are going to use. For thin crochet cotton you will need to put more base stitches, whereas with a yarn like sock yarn or baby yarn you can use fewer. There's a bit of trial and error involved, although there's no exact and perfect number... and many will work and make a nice looking edge. Pick a crochet hook that will work well with your chosen thread/yarn.

Next, put your hook through an opening in the knit near the top of the sock and pull through a loop. I like to do it a couple of holes down so it is sturdily attached. Try to use the same distance from the edge for each subsequent stitch.

Next, pull through a second loop at the place where you think, by continuing evenly, you will get a good stitch count.

Next, yarn over and pull the loop through the two loops already on the hook. I enjoy knitting and crocheting for the baby, but she honestly doesn't need very much. She's a Florida baby so doesn't need as many wooly items as babies farther north. So... I was happy to find out she had outgrown her socks as I've been wanting to girly some up. At knitting this evening I tried the first one. I used what I thought was a cute sock yarn. It's ugh on a couple of levels. The color changes aren't quick enough to get them all in, so the ruffle misses out on the candy look of the yarn. The thickness of the yarn is a problem, too. The drape and shape was not what I was looking for.

So I moved on. With ruffle number 2 I chose an ombre crochet cotton. Much better! The sock above is going to have its ruffle removed and replaced with one like this one. It was easy to do. I just single crocheted into the top of the sock, all the way around, using a size 4 metal hook. I used the weave of the sock as a guide for where to put the stitches in so it would be even. The stitches were connected when the end of the round was reached. I then followed this stitch pattern...

Chain 3 (acts as a dc)
then dc in same sc.

Then 3 dc in next sc, and 2 dc in next sc... all the way around.

It's a good place to try fancy stitches, but that will be in later pairs.

Hopefully this is how the baby will feel about her new, embellished socks!

Blog Challenge - I'll Start with Some Ornaments...

Kristin on Reclaiming the Home over at Ravelry threw out a challenge to blog daily in December... I'm going to try.

My family and I have always enjoyed crafts... and holiday crafts are especially fun... so here are a few of the Christmas ornaments we have crafted over the years.

First is a little strawberry made out of a walnut. We made these with the kids when they were little, they could paint, cut the felt for the strawberry top, and assemble them, with just some help from an adult with the hot glue.

The second is a mouse. She's made out of a walnut shell half, with pistachio shell ears... using a matched set. We used yellow felt for the Swiss cheese. For some we glued on bead eyes but this one has painted features and a yarn tail. Fishing line for the hanger.

Different color felts could be different cheeses.

Last year my daughter Laura and I made some out of polymer clay on clear glass balls. We made little log rolls of different colors, like making spiral cookies, then sliced them and stuck them closely together on the glass ball. We got them to form a solid skin on the ball by rolling them around while applying gently pressure. We baked them without the little metal hanger part attached. The thing that surprised me about them was how heavy they turned out... still light enough to put on the tree without any problems, but they weigh more than you expect an ornament to weigh.

I'll be back tomorrow for day two of the blog challenge!

Happy New Year... the kitchen progresses nicely!

Happy New Year! I hope this year is a good one for everyone.

Ahhhh.... The kitchen is finally at a point where I can use it happily and slowly finish it up.

The major, visible changes include new flooring, countertops tiled, the peninsula changed to include the high ledge and the eating ledge, a new sink, and the stone on the walls.

One thing that still needs to be done is enclosing the space where the wine fridge is. I didn't put stone on the wall there since I knew we'd enclose it later. Additionally, the front part of the eating ledge needs oak trim.

Here's another view of the stone tile we used on the wall which opens to the screen room. We got it at Home Depot - it's real stone, just cut to tile thickness. The thickness varies from stone to stone and they are heavier than you'd think. Each stone had to be individually "buttered" with mortar, affixed to the wall, and then had a little nail hammered in underneath. If I didn't do that they slowly slid down the wall. If you look to the left of the furniture about midheight along the beadboard- you can see a tile I forgot to put the nail under! It slid down until it rested on the stone underneath. It had already dried in place when I found it... oh well - I wasn't aiming for perfection!

For grouting I used "Biscuit" colored grout. I applied it with what looked like a giant pastry bag (ow, ow, ow to holding that carefully at arm's length when it was full of wet grout) My fingers ended up being the only thing that smoothed the grout well. Lots of work and mess, but I'm pleased with the result.

The other side of the "high ledge" has this row of cubbies facing the kitchen. I wanted open storage spaces, visible from the kitchen, but not visible from the dining area. They still need a bit of oak trim at the front of those uprights.

The 20+ year old mauve formica counters were resurfaced with these Stonepeak tiles... made in Tennessee. The decorative tiles at the front are American Olean tiles from Lowe's.

The cabinets got knobs and pulls. I think 20+ years of having none contributed to their messiness!

I LOVE the new sink. The old sink was a problem when trying to wash giant stock pots. Since I've always had a double sink (that I can remember) I wasn't sure how I would feel about the really big single. I was hoping I would like it... and I like it more than I could have imagined. That grid on the bottom is great - the water sloshes right through it and down the drain. No more dishes sitting on the bottom as dirty water pools around them.

It's a Blanco Silgranite in Anthracite. We considered insetting it into the tile counter but opted for the easier "drop in" installation.

Here's another view in the other direction. It's where the most work needs to be done! The beadboard wall needs to be finished. The wall was started a few years ago (we are not fast renovators) and separates the kitchen from the den. There is a pocket door and those are doors enclosing storage on the left awaiting their beadboard facing. The room started out 42 feet long - I prefer smaller spaces.

There isn't much plain wallspace in the kitchen anymore... but what there is is now painted "Swiss Coffee"

One last closer look at the kitchen area. If you look closely through the kitchen window on the right you can see some large banana leaves. Unhappily they will be mush by morning. FL is having an "Arctic" blast tonight and the temperatures will be in the 20s. Very annoying when it will be back in the 70s in a couple of days. A few hours below freezing wreaks havoc on my landscaping! That banana is about 20 feet tall - I live in a stilt house!

My husband and I did all the changes ourselves, with a bit of help from our teenage son. Lots of work, but we are happy with the results.

Blogger's got a picture issue...

When you click on the latest blog photos - you get an "open as" message instead of the larger photo...

They're working on it.

Beginning to look a bit like Christmas...

Our Christmas decorations are mostly up. A few things here and there still need to be done, and of course I am making a few more items to add. This year we donated quite a bit to a charity shop, and our daughters took some items for their own homes. Our decorating has changed over the years... no more piles of teddies dressed in holiday hats and scarves... No more candy canes and big trains around the tree, but the changes we have made fit this time in our lives just right.

Our front hallway furniture is topped by a choir of angels, and a German candle arch is on the right. I love vintage angels almost as much as I love vintage Santas - so when I see them at thrift shops they always come home with me.

The "Welcome Friends" sign stays up year round.

Our Santas overflow the piano top. Only certain Santas come to live with us. They can be new, or old, plastic with an arm missing, or handmade... they just have to "belong" up there.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but there are over 100 Santas, and a few Mrs. Claus... atop the piano!

Of course we have to leave room for the Christmas piano music, which I piled on a chaise across from the piano for the photo :)

Our household LOVES Christmas music, and we play it here, and also on the too many Christmas CDs we have.

One of the jobs I have set for myself is to recover that (awful) red velvet piano stool. I want to knit and felt something that goes with the rest of the living room.

My brother got this nativity scene for us when he spent a semester in Jerusalem. I've added other little wooden animals to the scene through the years. The extra camels and donkeys seem appropriate, but the kangaroo definitely has a perplexed look on his face.

And last but not least (and not all - I don't want to be blogging all day!) is this year's Christmas tree. Our tree looks pretty much the same year to year, since we use an artificial tree and use the same ornaments, too. Very traditional. This year we have fewer ornaments since we distributed some to our daughters, but I have found some knitted ones I want to make and the empty spaces will refill.

We've used an artificial tree for many years now. I was a staunch "real" tree person until I heard on NPR (don't you love NPR?) that real trees can trigger allergies - and if they were sprayed, the toxins can be released into your house. ACK - no more real trees for us.

And no... we aren't blocking a real door - that's the door to under the stairs, which houses the downstairs AC. Yeah - in FL you even might need it at Christmas time. Perhaps a knitted tree skirt would look better under the tree than the gold fabric to which we always default?

Happy Decorating!

Kitchen Redo

A while back my kitchen floor started to really get on my nerves. I didn't hate the aging blue and white vinyl, but it was no longer possible to get it clean without a marathon effort with those magic cleaning sponges. Add some back problems and four dogs and the floor was usually... well - the word icky describes it quite appropriately.

So... We decided to put down a new floor. We chose to go with vinyl again for several reasons... it is an easy DIY... the price is right... our house is on stilts and getting the floor rigid enough for ceramic or porcelain tile would be a BIG job... and we didn't want wood or laminate. It's a big floor - the kitchen is on the other side of that peninsula behind the table. The tile extends into the laundry room which is to the right of where you see the fridge, and into the bathroom which is beyond the laundry room.

We brought home a bunch of samples from the local home improvement stores and after laying them on the floor to see which we preferred... uh oh - too many! We ended up putting an assortment down and like the results. Once the new floor was down, the shabbiness of most everything else became glaringly apparent. A mini remodel became the new goal. I love to (over)research things, so I got books out of the library, visited some stores, watched home improvement shows on tv, bought some kitchen magazines and spent time on some internet forums on remodeling and redecorating. After all that I realized I didn't want a huge, expensive kitchen remodel that belonged in the glossy pages of a magazine ... I wanted a kitchen remodel that was cozy and functional... updating it... but still using most of the things we already have.

Even though we have plenty of cabinets, living in the same house for 17 years, coupled with my reluctance to toss stuff, made for cabinets that were not serving our needs. My husband and I spent a few hours going through each drawer and cabinet. We tossed (donated, gave to our kids, etc.) LOADS. I rearranged a few cabinets, too... to make the space work better. My husband put up two spice racks inside cabinet doors, installed those little pull outs in the false front drawers under the sink, and added some racks inside cabinets to make our pans, lids, etc., more accessible. Inside one of the drawers a knife rack was installed, and a miscellaneous cooking stuff drawer was set up with one of those great wooden dividers you customize to fit.

Before I started reading the home improvement forums I thought our solid oak cabinets were nice. I have since found out that they are considered awful, dated and just generally undesirable. Oh well - I don't usually replace perfectly serviceable items! I guess I am NOT up-to-date. I did want them cuter, and the bottom cabinets were uncleanable, so I painted them red. Finding the "perfect" red was a huge pain. Those same forums that let me know my oak cabinets were awful suggested Benjamin Moore paint - $50 and a single gallon later and I was NOT happy with the color - nor did it adhere well to the primed cabinet surface. I ended up using Rustoleum Painter's Touch latex. I primed with gray which is recommended for under red. The red was made by mixing together 1 quart gloss Colonial Red, 1 quart satin Claret Wine, 4 tablespoons satin Black, and a squeeze of red oxide from one of those little bottles of decorative paint. I did three coats of red, sanding between each coat. Part of the prep I did was scraping each cabinet with a razor blade to get every bit of "ugh" off that I could! It WAS a pain... it WAS a lot of work - but I love the way they turned out.

Our old stove hood had some problems so we changed that too - once again NOT going with what the magazines consider a must - a fancy ($$$) hood... but just choosing a standard black one from a home improvement store. I liked the idea of making the hood look a bit like a chimney, so painted the cabinet above the hood black. I now have tricolored cabinets! Red lower cabinets, oak upper cabinets, and the black over the stove.

We replaced all the drawer glides - ahhh... drawers that don't stick are heavenly. We also installed knobs and pulls... in black... going with the generally red/black/white/oak color theme. We replaced all the cabinet hinges while we were in the new hardware mood - it's amazing how awful hinges can get over time... and how easy it is to not notice just how awful they are getting.

My white stove and refrigerator are also fashion don'ts! - another revelation I received when perusing the home improvement forums. LOL - They are staying until they no longer function... and at that point I will decide what I want to replace them with. Stainless steel is the norm now - but who wants to keep up with the fingerprints (and the dog nose prints?) I spray painted my stove knobs red - just for cute.

A few more changes are underway. We are changing our single level peninsula (almost completed!) to a three level, wider one. The 22 year old mauve formica countertops are being tiled, and the double stainless sink is being replaced with a single large (huge?) black one. We are not reinstalling the disposal - we compost all our scraps anyway... so don't feel the need for one. Two walls are being covered in thin slate bricks.

These tiles and slates are the ones awaiting installation. The decorative tile atop the plain black is going to be the edging for the counter.

For so many years my kitchen was blue... blue... and more blue. It'll all be gone soon. I'm not sure what color to paint the walls that won't have slate - but I'm leaning towards beige (which is hilarious - I am so NOT a beige or white wall person!) Maybe I am getting less colorful as I age? Come to think of it - my first post shows a white room... LOL - it is the only white room in the house - excluding the upstairs hallway.

Christmas is looming and the still unfinished kitchen is wearing on my. Hopefully we will take the plunge in the next few days to do the counter tiles - which is the single most daunting task in this kitchen redo - barring any unforseen complications with the sink replacement :)

I'm off to work on the peninsula/tile/sink... wish me luck!

First Post

My inaugural post - and I have nothing monumental to say. I don't embrace technology, but rather am dragged, kicking and screaming, to reap its benefits.

My intentions are to post about whatever it is that I want to share at blog time.

I'm on Ravelry - Dianetoo - and a favorite forum there is "Reclaiming the Home" Several days of organizing have led to a reclaimed craft room... and here it is.

On the left is the view from the doorway. The sewing machine is always out. Tapestry yarns are on the left with other yarns in baskets. I got the wall hung shelving and drawer set at a thrift shop, part of a set from Denmark - the other pieces ended up in the study. My husband built the white shelves to the left to house my tapestry yarns - but they have far outgrown its dimensions.

I think I should make some curtains.

Next is some yarn stash with straight needles on the side.

Circulars are in a hanging holder on the left side of the armoire.

The walls are painted "Warm Fleece" which I picked solely based upon the name.

Cleaning this room out made me realize that yarn shopping is NOT something I should indulge in anytime soon. More yarn is hiding in those big baskets. Why does everything look so small in the picture? The shelves are about 5 feet high.

The not so panoramic view of the closet!

Yarn and spinning stuff (fibers included) are mostly on the right. Needlework is stuffed into a knitting caddy. Sewing - buttons, beads, fabric, notions, laces and trims, notions and all manner of doodads are to the left. The fabrics and boxes at the top of the closet still need to be sorted.

Continuing around the room is the serger desk and craft bookcase, neither of which is pictured - mostly because this is my first post and I have no clue what I am doing on this blog thing!

I did take pictures and the pictures made me realize the serger area is ugly, and needs redemption, but the bookcase is fine just as it is. The back of the door is where all my project bags are hanging... and that could definitely be improved upon... I guess hooks on the wall behind the door will make it onto this weekend's "honey-do" list.

Hmmm... I didn't fold the pile atop the armoire!

Art supplies are in the top right, Christmas crafting stuff in the bottom left drawer - and most of the rest is home decorating fabric. The armoire is from Freecycle. The craft room is at the top of our two story stilt house. After dragging the armoire up two flights of stairs my husband announced when we sell the house the armoire was staying. It's oak and wasn't a joy to carry.

Thanks to "Reclaiming the Home" this part of my home is now neat, clean, and (almost) organized :)

If anybody can read this it means I have successfully completed my first blog post.
